Investors buy up shares on Asian markets

SYDNEY, Australia Stock markets were generally firm across Asia on Monday. The Nikkei 225 gained 19.63 points or 0.09% to 22,269.88.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose 31.26 points or 0.12% to 25,633.18.

The Shanghai Composite strengthened 31.64 points or 1.22% to 2,630.51.

The Australian All Ordinaries jumped 16.20 points or 0.27% to 6,027.20.

On foreign exchange markets the euro fell sharply to 1.1253 in early-afternoon trading in Europe.

The British pound fell to 1.2839 on concerns Britain would not reach a deal with the EU on Brexit.

The Japanese yen weakened to 113.91, but was firmer than an earlier low of 114.22.

The Swiss franc traded at 1.00972 while the Canadian dollar weakened to 1.3207.

The Australian dollar fell to 0.7197, while the New Zealand dollar dipped to 0.6719.
